Meet Juliana Monsalve Álvarez

May we know your name?
"Juliana Monsalve Álvarez"

Could you give us a brief overview of yourself and your business?
"I'm an industrial designer, focused on brand identity and art direction. I have my company named JulimonDesign in Colombia and I work with many clients around the world."

Could you describe one of your typical workdays?
"I wake up, have my breakfast, go to the gym, meditate and have my second breakfast and organized myself for the day.

Then I study my specialization and read/see a story of successful business. And then I start to work at 2 pm on my business until 11 pm."

What software/applications which help you in your workflow, would you recommend for digital artists?
"To design and edit pictures PSD, Ai, Lightroom. Premier to edit videos but there are many apps, that are simple and easy to use on your mobile such as Play movies mobile and Cute Cut"

What parts of your job do you find most challenging?
"The relationship with my clients. Not just for one job, the challenge is to keep them with you for all the designs they need."

What do you find most enjoyable?
"The results. To see my clients happy."

Which seasons of the year are toughest in your job?
"All year? Lol, that is difficult to measure."

What do you suggest is the biggest challenge graphic design (as an aspect of digital art) is facing currently?
"To compete with the new apps and websites that "do your job" in an easy way, without the necessity to pay for a designer"

Can you tell us about your worst client experience and how you handled it and also your mildest experience too?
"The worst client experience I've had was a dance academy.

We started to work on a show and then, after two months of working with them, they realized they didn't have the money to pay for my work. So, they started to make my days stressful. One day, I was buying all the art for the event and they called me and I new that is was over.

So, I went to the academy, gave them back all the art materialsfor the show and the real challenge was to negotiate with them the price of my work in a mature and polite way.

I thought we ended our relationship well, but after one month I realized that they were talking bad about me and my work with all the people. At the end I was the bad girl because they realized they didn't have the money to pay me and they thought that what they paid me was a lot of money. The worst thing was that they said to all the people that I left them alone 20 days before the show and that's was not true.

So at the end you can do the best of you, but if the client doesn't like your work or doesn't have the money to pay you, they are gonna talk bad about you.

So, my advice will be: do and give the best of you. People are gonna talk about you anyway. By nice to people and work hard."

How would you suggest digital artists present a proposal in order to win a place in a bid? Using any context of your choice.
"1. You have to be professional and polite all the time with the people.

2. You are a designer, so act as a designer. The presentation you give to your clients, has to be nice, creative and clear for the client.

3. Stay humble, don't think you are the king of Queen of design.

4. Listen to your clients. Focuse on what they need, not on what you want. They are paying you for your skills with design.

5. Have your ideas in order and you concept for the presentation.

6. Dress nice. They are gonna see you and pay you if you look professional. Have your own style but in a meeting with a client, you have to be the best of you.

7. Be the best. Study all the time, read books, news of innovation and design. Don't think that you are already too smart or too creative.

8. Be able to reinvent yourself. If something is not working for you change it."

What would you say is the future of digital art in the growing technological revolution? Any suggestions for digital artists on necessary adjustments?
"This is an interesting question.
I think that there are new opportunities in the digital marketing.
70% of the companies for 2023 are not invented yet. It all depends on us as entrepreneur. We have to evolve and create new things for the society."

How can we connect with you?

3. Be humble all the time.

4. Work as a team.

5. Study all the time."

Thanks for having Arts and Up, Juliana.
