We caught up with an amazing member of our community and here's what she about;
Thanks a lot for having us, Joanna. Can we meet you?
My name is Joanna Ejiro Ugboboghene. A graduate of Mass communication from the University of Benin. I am a lover of GOD and ART and the owner of the brand called "JARTICUL".
A platform that communicates art, creativity and entertainment in different forms. I am a graphic/digital artist, dancer, actress, etc. As cliche as it may sound, I appreciate everything that concerns ART! I live to see that ART dominates the world.
What country are you based in?
NigeriaDescribe one of your typical workdays?
Oh! I had lots of typical days lol... On one of these days, I work, morning till next morning! Sometimes I forget to eat or sleep and sometimes also, I end up not achieving what kept me busy for the whole day... The next day, I try to improve and work harder. What software/applications which help you in your workflow, would you recommend for digital artists?
Photoshop!!!What parts of your job do you find most challenging?
Digital Painting; Trying to blend colours, get the right skin tone. I almost cry when I get it wrong and repeatedly work on a small portion of a job for days but I definitely don't give up. Sometimes, I start all over and over again!Clients Relation; Clients are awesome but sometimes, it's hard to please them and make them understand what you do!
What is your vision in the field of the tech-creativity?
I see myself using my brand "Jarticul" to connect and present art, entertainment and advertising to the world. My vision is to introduce creativity in ART, ART in entertainment and more ART in advertising, where other brands out there in the world can use just one brand (JARTICUL) to think, to communicate their thoughts and bridge the gap between the target audiences and their brands. With Digital art and more artistic platforms, Jarticul will be able to create more than the imaginations and expectations of people and brands to the point that people will look for a better word to describe "creativity".
What inspires you to keep pushing on to create new works?
God inspires me the most! God created ART and all new things and I am His Child, why won't I do like my father? Lol.My family inspires me a lot because they are super hardworking and innovative. So, I would wanna keep up with the family habit.😀
My future also inspires me.
I usually see myself and my brand as successful, creative, innovative and world-inspiring. So I aim to always push till I get to that point where I feel I need to stop and I think that point is gonna take NEVER! Cuz I don't intend to stop pushing!
What do you suggest is the biggest challenge creatives face in your field?
I'd say that People apart from artists hardly value art itself... So it's difficult to get them to appreciate and express positive feelings towards it especially in countries like Nigeria. Can you tell us about your worst experience with a client and how you handled it?
Worst you say!!! Here's my "worstest"😂. There was this client of mine who needed a logo design. We had an understanding and I sent a bill... The client paid and after the job has been completed, I sent a png & JPEG files of logo to this client. The client demanded that she doesn't need d png file but she needed a mock-up like that of her friends. So, I sent a mock-up too but a different mock-up of course... She disagreed and said in fact, she didn't need the logo anymore because a friend of hers had sent her with that mock-up, a different logo and not even a png file.
I laughed after seeing the logo, it had very low quality and was in a mock-up, not to talk of the extra details on the logo. I tried to educate my client a little bit but she said I couldn't do what she wanted and that she needed a refund!
She said she wanted to test me and see if I could do a simple job! Really? You paid for mock-up? And not for the logo itself? That's how some clients mix things up! They don't know what a brand identity is. I just thought .
But of course, it was stated that "no refunds" on the terms before we started business! But I tried to please her, telling her that I would work on another because I know the logo she accepted from a friend of hers was "ungraphical", if there is a word like that, but she refused and that's how our business ended and I moved on with life... Lol.
What are your most notable accomplishments which you would like to share with us?
Got to work with some profound brands and companies including fashion designers, celebrities and companies in and outside Nigeria. I have worked with Sparkling Shop London, AplusLondon, Olajide Falusi Architecture, TimeOff Hotels, etc, on Digital arts, brand identity designs incl promotional designs, fashion illustrations, etc. What would you say is the future of digital art in the growing technological revolution? Any suggestions for digital artists on necessary adjustments?
Years from now, I see Digital Art to be one of the most admirable, creative and mind blowing forms of art and will take an extraordinary form in the future! As the world gets digital and more technologically advanced, Digital art will create a more practical impression on creativity!People will view and communicate their ideas clearly. Digital art will create interrelationship between Nations where artists will come together and create "magic". Let's say the future of Digital Art will be magical.
Very soon, digital art will be one of the most "sort out" forms of communication and advertising in the world.
To digital artists out there, few things you need to have in you are patience, consistency, motivation, hard work, focus, etc... You need to be consistent while you learn to get better. Always try to improve and do more everyday! Never do less than what you did yesterday!
This is hard work, we know but make sure you have a motivation that will keep you going! Don't forget to have a focus, it will help you avoid distractions also... Don't feel disappointed at yourself when you see other artists doing what u cannot do.
Be encouraged, create your own style, Be you! Be Detailed! Be Creative and create new things! Be innovative! Be Forward-minded!
